The Gods: Rebellion [Calvi + Chillingo] - $0.99

**This review was contributed to The App Shack by Alister from the Touch Arcade Forums**

Over a year ago our Chinese counterparts were given a delightful treat by the folks of Calvi games. That delectation was a title which was all about slashing, dismembering and kicking some serious ass like any proper brawler provides. It was a UE3 powered game called Infinity Of God. Ever since I saw the gameplay videos and features about it, I've been itching for it to be translated and available for localization. Luckily, a well known and highly regarded publisher took the game under its wing and made it playable for all of us. Now bearing a new name to make its international debut, Chillingo proudly presents, The Gods: Rebellion.

In this game you play as Fu Xi, the Dragon God, which came down from the celestial heavens in order to liberate mankind from the oppressive rule of his fellow deities. Somehow I see the protagonist as a Prometheus like figure from the East rather than a god of war. So people who might think the story is a carbon copy of another very popular game can be rest assured, it's not. The narration of the tale is delivered through animated cut scenes that have caveman like art which gives an epic/ancient feel to it. Though I am quite far from nominating it for a world fantasy award, I find the story line to be good enough to entertain me and keep me interested.

Now for the most important part; how it plays. There are various defensive maneuvers you can do such as blocking, dodging and countering an attack. While there are two types of offensive actions such as the dragon fist attack which is weak yet fast and  the blazing axe attack that deal more damage at a slower pace. Another entertaining mechanic to this game are the combos. There are simple combos and  there are special combos which end with a bang. Clearly, the combat system truly shines because of the various ways the player can approach the game. The different facets of the combat also have certain distinctions that can be either a pro or a con, so strategy plays a factor in the gameplay department as well. I also find the over-all controls to be responsive and precise.

Another brilliant factor to this game is the AI. Each opponent you face attacks and moves in different ways. Some enemies can stop your combos by blocking and others will interrupt your momentum by attacking quickly. Plus some enemies also have diverse properties which make their attacks unblockable or can't be countered. I also like the pace and timing which the bad guys come at you. It makes the battles more exciting. So if you're going to do some brainless button mashing, then prepare to die as this is a game of skill and timing. Awareness of the situation that's happening around you is essential, thus doing something at the right time is key to your success. Clearly making progress towards the game feels like a rewarding experience.

It's also interesting that the game doesn't contain any puzzles, unlike some other brawlers that have been released for the platform. But if you're looking for some alternate experiences, or some breaks from all that hacking and slashing, there are some segments in the game where the objective is to avoid traps. Another important thing to mention is the character progress can be attained by collecting soul points that enable you to purchase upgrades, a mechanic  similar to Devil May Cry, God of War and other games within the genre. Pretty much it stays pure to its general concept, which is to generate as much action sequences as possible.

Though this game might not have jaw dropping graphics or contain ridiculous amounts of effects, it still looks quite good. I beleive that it's more crucial that an action game should have a solid frame rate so that there's no glitches or lags. I also like the button size and the camera distance and angles because you can see a lot, if not most of the things, around you. As they say, the threats that you don't see coming are the one's that will kill you. The game also contains IAPs which can be used to purchase upgrades and unlock other characters that you can use. Having played a lot, I don't feel them to be intrusive or necessary since it's your skill that can carry you through. You can definitely finish the game without purchasing a dime.

My only critism about the game is a lack of variety in the enemies you'll face. I would like to see different faces, yet it's very good that you can really distinguish them apart from each other. A classic case of quality vs. quantity. So far as to what I've experienced from my playing sessions, this is the best and most proper brawler available on the iOS. It stays on its main context/goal to give you an action packed extravaganza that you yearn for. If you've been a fan of the genre and are looking to bring a bit of violence and blood into your life, then check this title out. For the very affordable price of a measily $0.99, what more can you ask for.

Cordy 2 [Silvertree Media] - FREE - $4.99 Full Game Unlock

**This review has been contributed to The App Shack by Alister from the Touch Arcade Forums**

There has been a trend of speculation among the mobile game press, reviewers and analysts, of how to translate a great platformer onto our beloved touchscreen devices. Most cite Rayman Jungle Run as the prime example and though I love that game in the back of my mind I can't help but think of it as Rayman: Origins Lite. Pretty much the conventional wisdom to make games like these successful for the platform is to shorten the levels, put in an auto running mechanic, implement swipe or one touch controls and then simplify the over-all gameplay. With the current iterasions of the Sonic games in the AppStore that's lacking the proper precision of controls and output due to virtual button mishaps, it's hard to argue againts the status quo. Luckily the very talented folks from Silvertree Media have proven these statements wrong with their new game; Cordy 2.

The story of the game starts out when our charming hero Cordy and his side-kick Volt crash their space ship on Planet 2. Suddenly they find the place terrorized by the terrifying Boogaloo and his menacing Boogie Bots who have suppressed the worlds energy resources. Since it's in the protagonists nature to be both heroic and selfless, Cordy sets off to fight evil and help the citizens of the planet by giving them their power supply/electricity back one action packed level at a time, while having lots of fun doing so as well, as he's always smiling. Well maybe that's his way of psyching out the enemy, hehe.

As you play through each stage, there are two items to collect; gears (which are quite similar to gold rings from Sonic) and some lightning bolt looking zaps that seem vital for pressing through the game, since you are powering up a planet. Each level has 3 goals to achieve, each giving you a star like most mobile games do. Those 3 objectives are finishing the level, collecting all the zaps and beating the quick trial challenge. Now let me tell you in advance that gears and stars have some uses. Gears can be used to unlock bonus stages and some hidden areas, while advancing through the main levels will require a certain number of stars that you've collected.

The gameplay of Cordy 2 is absolutely brilliant!! From the very fast pace that's accompanied by highly intuitive and precise controls with very accurate output, to the vast depth of its mechanics. Various powers can be attained by combining Cordy with allied bots resulting in possible interaction with the environment/real estate that lies all around the stage. Plus having very clever level design that's overflowing with sophistication, complexity and length, that can easily match up to your console platformers, the developers are obviously not messing around as thier creation is executed and polished to perfection.

The details of the background and over all aesthetics are gorgeous. The BGM is quite good also and proves to give off good vibes while playing through the game. It also features IAPs that are purely cosmetic alterions for the main character, so you can be rest assured that it's not necessary, though personally I'm think of buying some in support for the creators amazing efforts.

If you are one of the people out there who's been searching and waiting for a platformer at the same caliber of Rayman: origins or some of the other triple A titles to be available on the AppStore, then look no further. You can download Cordy 2 and check out the 4 initial levels for free and see the greatness first-hand. If the experience leaves you hungry for more action, like me, you can push the buy button to unlock the full game.

3volution [ZAKI] - $1.99

Some time ago, our mobile devices/cell phones entertained us with games like Tetris and Snake, games that have very catchy qualities and seemingly endless replayability that drives us to try and obtain higher scores every time. Quintessential time-killers that provided an addictive stimulus and made waiting for someone or something quite bearable. Now in the present, new titles have emerged with new mechanics, themes and concepts. It seems the folks from ZAKI gaming division have brought a notable and very good product to the AppStore intertwined with similar characteristics previously mentioned with their release of 3volution.

3volution introduces us to a wild microbial world which comprises the primordial soup. Here players will meet three helpers named Nunstuck, Git and Slotermeyer and guide them through a path of progressive evolution. Though, along the way, there will be opposing forces and challenges, such as blockers, movers, goons and the occasional environmental change. Just like in real life, these factors will try to delay and derail you from becoming the supreme intelligent being that will eventually rule the biological world.

The object of the game is to flick one helper in between two other helpers, thus making a valid move or shot that rewards players with points. Though that may sound simple, there are a lot of complexities and factors to consider such as a time limit to do a legal move and opposing units that hamper your shot, all while considering you can't move a helper twice in a row. Failure to do so will result in a loss of life which eventually ends your game session. As you earn points after each session you progress by reaching a certain value that indicates your rank, represented by your current biological form. Starting out from a mindless cell organism and evolving into a frog, so on and so forth.

The game also features randomly sprouting goodies in the primordial soup, which can help you earn more points, destroy some opposition and unleash either the disco mode or fog mode which both have advantageous and dis-advantageous properties. If you want to controll the output of the goodies you can unlock the inventory feature through the game's IAP.

Pretty much, I am hooked on the game's mechanics. Trying to do trick shots and multiple goodie hits for higher point accumulation, while dealing with the obstacles that lay around, is a lot of fun. The strategic elements of chaining a succession of moves for sprees on a fast exciting pace is a testament to the developers very good game design. The visuals and aesthetics of 3volution are also very pleasing to the eye and accompanied by quirky BGM.

If you enjoyed games like Fruit Ninja or other great pastime arcade games be sure to try 3volution. For people on the fence or curious about this, there's a free edition available on the AppStore for you to download to check if this is your cup of tea.

March On Oz [City State Entertainment] - $3.99

I remember way back in the year 2000 when I encountered the game American McGee's Alice. It was bold and took a fresh point of view at one of literature's most beloved characters/fantasy world. Somehow playing through that game changed the way I look at, or imagine, Wonderland for the rest of my life. Now I feel nostalgic or reminded about those times having to come across March on OZ.

City State Entertainment's first title for the iOS is a game that transports us to their own rendition of the magical land of Oz. Here, you play an unnamed protagonist which you'll create/customize, that is whisked away by a tornado (like Dorothy) into an alternate version of Oz, only to discover that the realm is in dire peril under the invasion of the evil, mechanical looking, gnomes. Being convinced by the good witch Locasta to assemble and lead the Ozian Army of Resistance against the forces of evil, you march on a military campaign through the Yellow Brick Road towards the mystical Emerald city.

This is a strategy game that uses a lane defense system where you place an Ozian unit on a particular lane/area to stop a wave of marching enemies. Pretty much, the gameplay mechanic is quite similar to Plants vs. Zombies but offers more depth and flows at a much faster and exciting pace. In this game you can discover, or learn, battle formations that have a specific function and perk, summon a band of flying monkeys by using a magical golden flute to eliminate opposing units on a lane and have unique/hero like units that you can put on the battlefield once thus setting it apart from PvZ.

Each level of the game has a four star objective system for rating your strategic or gaming skills and 3 different difficulty settings. It also features unlockable content such as mini games, comic strips of the story and an encyclopedia of the different creatures/characters you'll encounter in the world. Giving it a lot of the replayability options which most of us yearn for. Being equipped with an online file saving interface you can also be rest assured that your progression is safe and can be revisited.

The narration of the story is set on a humorous tone with quirky animated characters to discover as you go along the way. With a beautiful BGM/soundtrack and a lush rendered 3D environment, it makes the game feel more alive rather than dull or soulless, thus making me feel engaged and emotionally invested towards the game.

My only critism about March On Oz is the level select section that's not fixed yet as you can only replay the tutorial levels, though the developers already said they are working on a fix that is to be uploaded soon. It's very hard not to love this game as it is very polished and exuberates with much artistry. The game also has a lot of  features we request and yearn for in the mobile gaming world and has no IAP offering what so ever, which is pretty rare nowadays. The developers passion for making the game is felt on every detail or facet you come across as you play on. If you are a fan of Strategy or Tower Defense games be sure to check this title out.
